I, too, share John Brown’s dream, and I, too, believe sincerely that I have been guided by HASHEM on my mission. However, my 37-year oil exploration career has been molded, b’ezrat HASHEM, by great mentors and my experience with world-wide fields and oil habitats as potential analogues have allowed me to apply them to Israel. As the exploration manager and chief geologist of INOC (1992-1997), I was given the opportunity from the L-rd to observe first-hand how exploration is done in Israel and how it differs markedly from how major oil companies would operate. Oil knows no political or license limitations. Risk in any oil venture is reduced by scientific research, but risk is never zero. Only by applying regional geology and basin analysis and, thereby, identifying the operative petroleum systems and recognizing the geological history can one determine the most advantageous drilling locations to discover the ‘elephant-sized’ oil accumulations that are DEFINITELY in Israel. The oil is there – that is a given. Exxon in 1962 and Shell in 1979 had it right – there are as much as two billion barrels of oil in Israel. At 2-3 billion barrels of oil, Israel has the potential to have as much oil as Saudi Arabia – on a relative area basis.

I do not intend to argue the religious references as justification for drilling here or there – that’s for the individual operator. But if an oil explorer does his science ‘correctly’, he stands a better chance of finding that oil. The good L-rd rewards those who do the required and frequently frustrating job right. Let’s hope that that reward is forthcoming to all who follow the proper methods and motivations.
